Evidence Indonesian FA Finally Come To Terms With LPI?

JAKARTA (4 May 2011) – The Indonesia National Team Management (BTNI) has announced a squad of 46 players to attend centralised training in preparation for the SEA Games which the country will be hosting later this year.

Following the announcement of Rachmad Darmawan as the new chief coach of the Under-23 squad, the list of 46 players will begin training in Batujajar from 7 to 21 May 2011.

COMMENT - significant in that the squad features several players from the breakaway Liga Primer Indonesia signifying formal acceptance of that league by the PSSI.

Divisi Utama Play Offs

Eight teams join the Divisi Utama play offs at a date and venue to be confirmed.

Persiraja, PSAP, Mitra Kukar, Persiram, Persidafon, Persiba (first and second in each group) will be joined by PSMS and Gresik United (best 3rd place finishes).

Persiraja and PSAP come from Aceh, PSMS from North Sumatra, Persiba from Central Java, Gresik United from East Java, Mitra Kukar from East Kalimantan while Persiram are Raja Empat (West Papua) and Persidafon are Papua.

The top three teams will get promoted while the fourth placed team will go into a play off against Bontang. Sorry, the team that finishes bottom of the Indonesia Super League. So, Bontang.

From what I can make out both Mitra Kukar and Gresik United both boast decent stadiums while Persidafon have used the recently refurbished Mandala Stadium in Jayapura. Mind you, Bontang's stadium looks pretty tidy...just a shame about the six hour drive to the nearest airport!

Worawi Do Your Job!

BANGKOK (4 May 2011) – The FA of Thailand (FAT) will appeal against the decision to eliminate them from the second round of the 2012 Olympic Games qualifiers imposed by the Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) Disciplinary Committee.

Thailand were deemed by the AFC to have fielded a suspended player – Sucharit Chanthakul – when they beat Palestine 5-4 on penalties in the first qualifying round.

They are scheduled to take on Bahrain in the second round of the Olympic qualifiers in June.

“We have been formally informed by the AFC about the matter. We are appealing,” said Ong-arj Kosinkar, the secretary general of the FAT.

Sucharit was suspended at the Under-19 Asian Championship in 2008 and where according to the AFC, he had not yet served the ban before the Olympic qualifying match.

Ong-Arj argued that Sucharit was in the Thai squad at last year’s Asian Games but did not play which the FAT construed as having served his suspension.

Also Ong-Arj pointed out that the match commissioner at the Bangkok game should have informed Thailand during the pre-match meeting that Sucharit was ineligible.

Swimmer Daniel will miss SEA Games after shoulder operation

PETALING JAYA: Swimmer Daniel Bego is definitely out of the Indonesia SEA Games – sinking Malaysia’s hopes of repeating their 15-gold medal haul in aquatics.

Daniel, who starred with a five-gold feat in the Laos Games two years ago, has been ruled out for the rest of this year after undergoing a shoulder operation to correct a long-standing bone spur problem.

(A bone spur is a growth which forms on normal bone and can be extremely painful when it comes into contact with soft tissues or ligaments.)

National swimming coach Paul Birmingham said there was no way Daniel could recover in time to swim competitively at the SEA Games, which will be held in November.

Daniel is already skipping the World Championships in Shanghai in July although it is a major qualifying meet for the London Olympics next year.

“He is definitely out of the November SEA Games as he needs to rest for at least four months before getting back into the pool,” said Birmingham.

“We’ll have to do without him. I hope he’ll come back next year and aim to qualify for the Olympics.
“There is still time but whether he makes it or not depends on his progress in training.”

The aquatics team made a big splash in Laos, with nine of the 15 gold medals coming from the swimmers.
Birmingham conceded that Malaysia’s chances of repeating the feat in Palembang “are slim”.
Adding to his woes is the uncertain form of Siow Yi Ting.

The top female breaststroker is set to return home next month after completing her studies in the United States but she has not trained for almost a year and it is anybody’s guess whether she can repeat her three-gold medal show from Laos.

“These two swimmers are the inspiring figures in the team but I hope the others can rise to the challenge,” said Birmingham.

It looks like Daniel will take a big hit financially from his enforced absence from the Games.
Daniel, who broke four SEA Games records in Laos, would have been entitled to a big windfall if he could repeat his act in Palembang as the incentive for a gold medal has doubled from RM5,000 to RM10,000.

Speculation continues to mount that Arsenal will head to Asia for the first time since 1999. China and Malaysia have been mentioned as has a game in Thailand in Buriram. I would point out that this is all conjecture for the time being and that playing any game against Buriram is fraught with problems the club have no idea about.
